Is it possible to apply heat-shielding film to double glazing? Explanations and precautions

Double-glazing solar film: is it compatible?

When the sun beats down hard, our interiors quickly become veritable greenhouses! This can have an impact on our thermal comfort, prompting us to look for effective solutions. Luminis Films' anti-heat film stands out from the crowd. But one question often comes up: can solar film be applied to insulating glass, especially double glazing? Here are all the answers to help you make the right choice without risking damage to your windows.

What is double-glazing or reinforced insulation?

Double glazing consists of two panes of glass separated by a layer of air or gas (often argon). This structure limits heat loss in winter, while blocking out some of the outside cold. In the case of reinforced insulation glazing (VIR), a thin, invisible metal layer is added to one of the inner surfaces, further enhancing the insulating effect.

This type of glazing is now very common in modern housing. But its composition also makes it more sensitive to external intervention, such as the application of solar film.

The risk of thermal breakage: myth or reality?

Explanation of the phenomenon

Thermal breakage occurs when a pane of glass experiences too great a temperature difference between two nearby areas. If one part of the pane gets very hot (from the sun, for example) while another remains cool (due to shading), this can create internal stresses in the glass... causing it to crack or even shatter.

When is the risk real?

The risk is real, but it doesn't apply to all types of glazing or film. It depends on several factors:

  • Quality of glazing (standard, tempered, laminated, VIR...) ;
  • Window orientation (south-facing, shaded, partially covered) ;
  • Interior blinds;
  • Type of film used (reflection, tint, metallization, etc.).

Heat-shielding film and double glazing can coexist perfectly, as long as the rules of compatibility are respected.

What types of film are compatible with double glazing?

Outdoor films

Exterior films are the most recommended for insulating glass. Why is that? Because they block the sun's rays before they reach the glass, reducing the risk of overheating the inner pane.

Advantage: they maintain the thermal efficiency of the glazing and reduce the temperature rise by around 5°C in certain rooms.

Special low-emissivity films

For reinforced insulation windows, certain films are designed with low-emissivity technology. They let light through while reflecting heat. These films are better suited to complex glazing and limit the risk of thermal breakage.

Tips for safe installation

Check glazing type

Before installation, identify the type of glazing: single, double, VIR, laminated... This enables you to choose the most suitable double-glazed thermal glass film. You can find this information on our product data sheets.

Call in a professional when in doubt

Even if you're a skilled DIYer, it's best not to improvise. The experts at Luminis Films can :

  • Diagnose the compatibility of solar film;
  • Advise you on the ideal model;
  • Lay the film correctly, without bubbles or tension.
